My Retro Box - Loot Crate for retro gamers
There are now a multitude of subscription services similar to that of Loot Crate, but now we finally have a service dedicated to retro gamers - My Retro Game Box. Subscribers receive a random selection of retro games each month; games can be from any of the following formats NES, SNES, N64, Game Boy, Game Boy Colour, Game Boy Advance, Sega Master System, and Mega Drive/Genesis. Of course, the games are yours to keep for good - this is not a rental service.
Now before you begin to get sceptical, it’s worth noting that all of the games are checked and will be in good working order and clean. Not only that, but the boxes you receive are based on your preferences. Once you subscribe, you’ll be asked about your current collection and you can veto certain genres, for example, saying no to sports games means you’ll never open a box and receive a sports title. The website uses a system that it has nicknamed ‘Katy'; this system will take your preferences to ensure that the right games are delivered in your My Retro Box.
The games you receive will not necessarily be boxed, or contain manuals, and some of the labels may even be faded. However, the website explains that the service is aimed at “fun loving collectors” and that it does have standards when it comes to the conditions of the games, ensuring that you still receive a good copy.
My Retro Box has a set budget to use every month, as such it can’t guarantee a specific number of games that you will receive per box, but aims to “try to get the balance of great games/number of games right”. Occasionally you will also receive other goodies in your boxes, such as key chains or stickers, as well as offers for other products.
Both PAL and NTSC titles are available and My Retro Box ships worldwide. There are a variety of subscription options, $35 for one month, $100 for three months, $190 for six months, or $350 for a whole year. You are charged as soon as you subscribe, cancelling does not net you a refund but does prevent further repayments. Although the prices are in dollars, the service is actually based in Scotland and so offers free shipping to the UK. International shipping is an additional $6.
