Xbox Live and PlayStation Network suffer downtime over Christmas

Yesterday, both Xbox Live and PlayStation Network services went down, reportedly due to DDoS attacks. PlayStation Network is continuing to experience problems at this time, however, according to the Xbox Live status page Microsoft’s services are now back up and running. At the time, both Microsoft and Sony acknowleged the issues via the Xbox Live status page and Twitter:

 

It will come as no surprise that infamous hacking group Lizard Squad have claimed responsibility for the attacks, following weeks of threatening to take the systems offline. After having its inital Twitter account banned, Lizard Squad’s new Twitter account claimed responsibility for the attacks, stating “10,00RTS and we will stop smacking #Xbox and #PSN offline” as well as threatening “IF YOU DONT FOLLOW @TheKingCrucifix THEN XBOX AND PSN WILL NEVER BE ONLINE FOR THE REST OF CHRISTMAS” via Twitter.

 

What is a DDoS attack?

A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is an attempt to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended users. This is caused by increasing the server load to its limits by flooding the network of the target servers using a massive number of computers.
