Fox’s film adaptation of popular gaming franchise, Assassin’s Creed, has finally been given an official release date. The film will release on December 21, 2016, going head to head against an untitled Illumination Entertainment project.

The Assassin’s Creed film is to be directed by Justin Kurzel and will star Michael Fassbender, known for his role as Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto in the latest X-Men films. Fassbender has mentioned previously to IGN that the film will be a mix of the game and new story elements.

I’m always in two minds when things I love, such as games or books, are adapted into films or TV series as it can really go either way. The choices made so far, such as the decision to cast Michael Fassbender, have actually intrigued me more than disappointed me. However, ultimately it will come down to who Fassbender has been cast as, perhaps he is an entirely new character unknown to the fan base as of yet. It’s definitely something I plan to watch, so I hope that everything released about the film between now and then keeps my interest piqued as there is definitely potential for a great film with the Assassin’s Creed lore.
