Batman: Arkham Knight - Who is the Arkham Knight?

Arkham Knight

Warning, possible story spoiler/ character information spoiler alert!

With the final game in the Arkham series, Batman Arkham Knight, releasing in only a few months time, I thought it would be good to try to take a guess about the Arkham Knight’s true identity. Here are a few suggestions.

Red Hood (Jason Todd)

The art for the Red Hood

This is the obvious suggestion that everyone has been making. The main reason why people have speculated that the Arkham Knight is Red Hood is because there is Red Hood content planned for Arkham Knight, as well as Red Hood being reminiscent of the Arkham Knight. I honestly don’t think that it will be Red Hood because that seems too obvious of an answer. I think the real identity of the Arkham Knight will be much more cryptic!

Joker

This theory is the least likely but would Rocksteady really end the series without Joker? What if Joker faked his death and got a new persona? The only reason I could think of for the Arkham Knight being Joker is due to his popularity, other than that it doesn’t make any sense. I think that if Joker is to have a role in the game, that it will only be a small one, a hallucination from the Scarecrow’s fear toxin perhaps?

Quincy Sharp

Warden Sharp from Arkham Asylum

You are probably thinking I’m an idiot right now, but listen to my argument! This is my personal opinion, of course the actual Arkham Knight isn’t Sharp. However, the one thing that sticks out to me about the Arkham Knight is that it looks almost robotic, so what if the Arkham Knight is a robot? The name would make perfect sense, the Arkham Knight, Sharp was of course warden of Arkham Asylum and mayor of Arkham City! But does Sharp have a motive? Yes, he does - revenge. If you remember, Batman foiled his plans when Sharp was corrupt in Arkham City and it seemed that he had learned his lesson. One thing to remember about Sharp is that he is insane, he believes he is possessed by the spirit of Amadeus Arkham and subsequently kills some of the inmates. What if Sharp decides to kill Batman for the revenge of the events of Arkham City, perhaps he is manipulated by Scarecrow to join his plan. The Arkham Knight is a new character and Quincy Sharp was introduced in the first game of the series, so it would tie things together quite nicely in that respect.

Hush

During the events of Arkham City, there was a side mission named Identity Theft. In this side mission, Batman had to investigate a series of murders were the victim’s faces had been cut off. When Batman finally chases down the serial killer, Hush, he discovers that his true name is Thomas Elliot. When Hush removes his bandages, Batman discovers that Hush has performed surgery on himself, removing his face and using the faces of his victims to make himself look exactly like Bruce Wayne. Hush exits by saying “Wayne will suffer and you will not stop me“, could this could be a hint about Hush returning with a big role in Arkham Knight? I don’t think so for two main reasons. Firstly, Hush in the Arkham universe arguably doesn’t know that Bruce Wayne is Batman, otherwise he would have mentioned it during their confrontation. Secondly, if he had since discovered Batman’s identity, why would he hide the face that he put so much effort into making under a mask? In my opinion he will return in a side mission, what do you think?

Azrael

Azrael from Arkham City

This is a lesser known character from Arkham City, who you meet on only a few occasions. One of the main reasons people think Arkham Knight could be Azrael is because he arguably warns Batman about the coming of the Arkham Knight, telling him “Dark days are coming, Batman. The prophecy is coming true. You are the warrior who will close the gates of hell. You are the one who will save this day and in doing so events will occur that you cannot stop. From the ashes of Arkham, the fires will rage and Gotham will burn. And you, you will burn too.” Does this sound familiar? It should do because Azrael continually mentions fire, where have we seen fire before? The logo of the Arkham Knight game, of course. This tells us that the prophecy could be coming true in Arkham Knight. Another good reason to think that Azrael is the Arkham Knight is the fact that Azrael is known to wear the armour of a knight, and of course the Arkham Knight also appears to be a fan of “knights”. Also, Azrael is very acrobatic and is adept at fighting. The only problem I have with Azrael being the Arkham Knight is the fact that he doesn’t seem like the type to battle with guns, as well as the issue of where he could have gotten an army/money for such a big operation? There still could be a big chance for Azrael to be the Arkham Knight, or perhaps he will feature as a major character in the game in his usual guise.

Bruce Wayne (alternate dimension/universe)

Bruce Wayne from Arkham City

What would your reaction be if Batman unmasked the Arkham Knight and his identity turned out… to be himself? This would be an amazing plot twist! The theory is that a Bruce Wayne from a different universe comes to this one and could be possessed by the spirit of Amadeus Arkham (just like Sharp). This Bruce Wayne thinks that Gotham should be cleansed from its sins and thus breaks his no killing rule. This would make sense because the Arkham Knight is very acrobatic and seems to have a history in combat. This could also be the reason why he is called the “Arkham” Knight, since he believes himself to be possessed by the spirit of Amadeus! It would also explain how the Arkham Knight can afford all of his tech, army, and vehicles. This theory is definitely one for the books!

These are all just theories of course, not to mention that the Arkham Knight could be an entirely new character that we have yet to meet. If you agree with any of my theories and possibly want to expand upon it, reply in the comments or even send me a tweet! Or, tell me your own theories in the comments below! Either way, I hope you enjoyed this post!

Batman: Arkham Knight is due to release on June 2, 2015 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
