If you haven’t managed to save Thedas yet and are still playing through Dragon Age: Inquisition, then be warned that the following article contains spoilers.

If you have played Inquisiton, or at least far enough to have experienced the Temple of Mythal story mission, then you’ll know that by nominating the Inquisitor to drink from the Well of Sorrows results in a rather strange event. The Inquisitor encounters some unearthly voices for a brief moment after drinking from the well, which basically sounds like random gibberish.

Youtuber, Geek Remix, discovered that by playing the audio backwards the eerie whispers aren’t speaking gibberish at all but actual words. Although not all of the words are completely distinguishable, what everyone seems to agree is pretty clear is that they say: “She speaks…she’s fallen…go to him…the calling, the calling.” See the video below to see for yourself.

Although the meaning behind the words are still rather vague, there are a couple of theories bouncing around the internet as to what they could mean. I think it’s pretty easy to eliminate any player characters from the options of who could be referred to with “She speaks…she’s fallen…go to him…” as players can be of either gender yet the message in the game remains the same. Which leaves the question, who are they referring to? The “she” could by Mythal, or Flemeth, or both considering they are pretty much one and the same. The “go to him” could well be referring to Corypheus, but to be honest the people the whispers refer to could be someone we have yet to even encounter.

If you listen carefully you can also hear “Go to the altar“, which is fairly self-explanatory as this is the next step in progressing the story of Inquisition. So let’s not waste our time speculating on that.

Then there is the mention of “The Calling”, this could be referring to The Calling that the Grey Wardens experience. Grey Wardens take part in a ritual called The Joining where they drink a mixture of darkspawn blood, lyrium, and a drop of blood from an archdemon; few survive this initiation process. However, those who survive are linked to the darkspawn and are able to sense when the onset of a new blight has begun.

However, Grey Wardens are not immune to the taint of the blight. Eventually Grey Wardens experience nightmares and hear voices from the Old Gods - The Calling. This is the same “call” that summons the darkspawn to begin a new blight by seeking out the Old Gods. Before they are driven mad or overcome by The Calling, Grey Wardens take to the Deep Roads to oust as many darkspawn as they can and go down fighting in an honourable death.

Now, you might be wondering how all of this relates to Inquisition, but depending on your choices of previous games you might have already uncovered more about the wider Dragon Age plot then you realise. If Alistair stayed a Grey Warden, when prompted by the Inquisitor, he explains that the Hero of Ferelden is out searching the land for a way to reverse The Calling.

Considering that other plot elements are beginning to tie in with the blights and darkspawn, it wouldn’t surprise me if blights, The Calling and the mysteries surrounding it are further unearthed in future content. For example, let’s take Corypheus - one of the magisters who triggered the beginning of the blights being the focus in Inquisition, then discoveries such as that of red lyrium actually being normal lyrium with the blight taint. Many Dragon Age plots and themes from all the games are really beginning to interweave closer than ever before within Inquisition. I thought as much when I played the game, as stated in my review, in fact all of the plots seemed to by tying up so nicely that before I reaching the conclusion of Inquisition, I was afraid that Bioware was seeing to its loose ends and settling affairs in Thedas.

Of course, it’s all speculation, but I hope that one way or another fans get many of the answers that they desperately seek in future content such as DLC or sequels.
