UPDATE: Oh dear, I’m an April fool apparently. The below story was a crafty joke from the Jotun team, teaching me to not believe everything I read on April 1!

ORIGINAL STORY:

Will Dubé and the team behind Kickstarter success Jotun have made the tough decision to alter Jotun‘s art style. The hand-drawn art style of Jotun has appealed to many, and rightly so as it looks amazing, as seen from the boss fight video just below:

However, that beautiful animation has to be hand-drawn frame by frame and so understandably it takes a considerable amount of time to create. To deal with production constraints, the team has announced that the remaining Jotun will be fully rendered in 3D. Dubé has stated that it was “simply too expensive and too long to continue with a hand-drawn art style” but hopes that fans will embrace the new decision. The team discussed the idea with the community before finalising it and posting their decision via the official blog.

Created by Will Dubé, Jotun is an action-exploration game set in Viking purgatory. Players will take control of the fierce Norse warrior Thora, who has died a dishonourable death. Thora must earn her place in Valhalla by proving her worth to the Viking gods as she journeys through purgatory, facing challenges and defeating the almighty Norse elemental creatures - Jotun.

While it’s a shame that we’ll be missing out on more of the beautiful hand-drawn art, I think it’s an understandable decision to make to ensure that Jotun is completed. I don’t think this will detract greatly from the game overall and I’m still looking forward to playing Jotun.
