100 days until E3: My predictions for the show
Today marks 100 days until June 16 which, coincidentally, is the first official day of E3. I therefore thought it would make sense to give my predictions on what news we should expect to hear coming out of the big event by going through the six main conferences. So, without further ado, here are my predictions on what we can expect to see at each conference:
Bethesda
Being that this is Bethesda’s first-ever E3 conference, something big is clearly in the works. Although there has been much speculation and hoaxes concerning a fourth Fallout, I truly believe that this will be announced in June. For Bethesda to, out-of-the-blue, announce their first ever E3 show, something drastic is clearly coming and the Fallout franchise is one of the most anticipated going. I would even guess as far as to predict a Dishonored 2 as well, given how well the first game did and that its developer Arkane Studios hasn’t developed anything in the three years since yet is still active. I would even go as far as to say they’d be ready to show gameplay for both if this is the case. This image allegedly leaked also points towards a prequel although its legitimacy is unknown.
I’m sure they will also take the time to talk about their already announced games: BattleCry, Doom and the console port for Elder Scrolls Online. All that would certainly seem to valid a conference with maybe even a new IP announcement on top.
EA
With EA it’s fairly predictable. There’s no doubt we’ll see all the familiar cash-cow sports franchises: FIFA 16, Madden NFL 16, NBA LIVE 16, NHL 16, and more. By then too, Battlefield: Hardline will have been released so a peak at upcoming DLC should be expected… and then the big boys. Mirror’s Edge 2 and Star Wars: Battlefront are most likely going to have some exciting play-throughs on stage, especially given Battlefront‘s confirmed release date of this year and the news of a secret screening leading to a standing ovation by its audience. There could be a surprise announcement of a new IP but given their already sizeable amount of games announced, I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t.
Ubisoft
Ubisoft’s announcements are less clear but one thing is certain - The Division. I personally wouldn’t object if they just did a one-hour play-through of just that, dropped the mic, then walked out but unfortunately that seems unlikely. A live play-through is pretty much certain and, alongside that, they’ll probably throw in some footage of the already leaked next Assassin’s Creed: Victory (or at least that’s what its working title is) showing off its gritty interpretation of Victorian England and a misleadingly stunning cinematic to go with it. As well as The Division, another Tom Clancy game, Rainbow Six: Siege, is sure to turn some heads with another piece of gameplay showing off more of its destruction and almost certainly a male hostage after the last showing’s debacle. As for new announcements, I sigh at the prospect of a second WatchDogs unless they can drastically change the formula so a new IP is a definite possibility.
Microsoft
Moving onto the hardware conferences, Microsoft’s showing is strong. As we already posted, Microsoft have arguably the best line-up of exclusives out of the three console manufacturers: Fable Legends, Crackdown, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Halo 5: Guardians, Quantum Break, Scalebound and Forza 6. That’s a lot of games. I presume Microsoft will do what they did last year and simply introduce the developers and they’ll do their play-throughs of practically every game on that list. Not only that, it’s only a matter of time before Black Tusk unveil their Gears of War project and E3 would seem like the perfect place to do it. With all those games, it’s going to be difficult to fit them all in, however, I’m confident that this year’s Call of Duty will be shown as per usual during Microsoft’s conference. Treyarch are the confirmed developers so my guess would be a Black Ops 3, although a new World at War might push me to return to the franchise.
Nintendo
Like last year, it is likely Nintendo will opt for a ‘Digital Event’ rather than a show on the same day as all the other main conferences. And like Microsoft, Nintendo have a solid lot of games already announced for the Wii U: Starfox, Splatoon, Mario Party 10, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse and, of course, The Legend of Zelda. As for 3DS games there are plenty coming out; notably three new Lego games: Jurassic World, Avengers and Ninjago: Shadow of Ronin as well as Code Name S.T.E.A.M. and Xenoblade Chronicles. The show should therefore have a good amount of content to choose from and with already many big announcements made this year, E3 probably won’t come with too many surprises from Nintendo.
Sony
With very little exclusives already announced for the PS4, either Sony has some very large cards up its overly-sized sleeves or it is going to be a rather underwhelming conference unless it can secure some third-party games to show off. Sure, Uncharted 4 is going to be shown and the fans are going to love it, as well as they’ll probably be showing off the Day Z and Tropico 5 ports, but other than that, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, Arkham Knight, Mad Max, Project Cars , Just Cause 3 - I’d imagine at least some of these will be shown even though they’ll also be available on PC and Xbox One. For Sony’s conference to stand out as something special, a truly significant announcement needs to be made. Last of Us 2… that would do it.
Well, which conference are you most excited for? Is there any particular game you want to see announced or shown? Let me know in the comments.
