The Last Guardian is still in development, Sony files petition to revive trademark

After the news that Sony had failed to renew its trademark for The Last Guardian, many fans began to fear the worst for the future of the game. However, Sony has stated that The Last Guardian is still in development.

Sony told the likes of Videogamer that the game has not been cancelled, although no reason was given for the decision not to renew the trademark. Sony has since filed a petition to revive the abandoned trademark, with the petition statement reading:

Applicant has firsthand knowledge that the failure to file an SOU or Extension Request by the specific deadline was unintentional, and requests the USPTO to revive the abandoned application.

The status of the trademark U.S. serial number 85700141 is now “Application revived and is awaiting further action“. So it appears that the abandonment of the trademark was purely by accident. It’s nice to hear that The Last Guardian is still in development, although I’m not sure what to think about Sony forgetting to renew its trademark. You’d think that a game with such a large fan base already would be well attended to, right?

The Last Guardian was initially planned to release on the PlayStation 3 at the time of its reveal back in 2009. However, we’re now five years on and part of a new generation of consoles so I think it’s safe to assume that game will now launch on PlayStation 4. At least I hope it’s this generation, if we have to wait for the PlayStation 5 I think we might all be a bit peeved.

Pretty disappointing “TeamICO” (or whatever the name for these devs) completely missed the boat with the PS3’s lengthy 7 year life span (ICO/SOTC HD bundle doesn’t count). Here’s hoping they don’t miss another generation with PS4..

At this point, I would literally welcome ANYTHING from TeamICO on PS4…(but The Last Guardian certainly looked very promising)

It would be pretty awful if it didn’t make it to PS4. I was really looking forward to the game, I still want to play it, but.. It’s been so long now that I worry that it won’t live up to the expectations we have of it, that’s if it ever gets released.
