During its Nintendo Direct broadcast today, Nintendo unveiled more information on Splatoon. The Wii U title will have its own plaza where you can see other player’s inklings and share messages. You can also choose to battle online with other players via the plaza. The characters within Splatoon are fully customisable, you earn coins from battles that can be spent in shops in the plaza to make your inkling exactly how you would like it to be. The plaza contains a weapons shop, hat shop, clothing shop, and shoe shop and you’ll be able to freely change your items whilst in the plaza. Different equipment and weapons can help you in developing your own strategies for battle.

There are three different types of weapons, main weapons that are your go-to weapons in battle, these are used to paint the ground and attack enemies. Then there are secondary weapons, these are more for support and can hold off enemies. Lastly, there are special weapons that charge up as you paint. The weapons come in sets of three, presumably containing one of each weapon pet set.

Splatoon is scheduled for a May 2015 release, although a specific release date remains unconfirmed.
