Underworld Ascendant fully funded on Kickstarter
Underworld Ascendant has reached its funding goal of $600K on Kickstarter and it still has six days to go. There was never any doubt in my mind that the game would be successful, although I had thought it would get a lot more funding than it has already. There are some stretch goals in place, the first one being $750k to get the Necropolis of the Ancients area, a new monster, and a novel. Can Underworld Ascendant achieve that stretch goal in six days though? I guess we’ll find out! If you have yet to check out this awesome game, now is the time to do so!
Underworld Ascendant will be the next-generation sequel to the legendary Ultima Underworld and Ultima Underworld 2. One of the most prominent features of Underworld Ascendant is the Improvisation Engine, where depending on what you are carrying or your situation, you can progress past certain obstacles or events in different ways. For example, a player coming to a subterranean river guarded by deadly lurker will have to decide what is the best way to cross. Attempting to swim across would end in a watery grave for the adventurer, however, tossing rotworm downstream to distract lurker would work, or charming a giant cave spider to carry you over would work too.
The Improvisation Engine will encourage players to experiment with what they have at their disposal, prompting you to create new techniques to help you in your adventures. Players will also be able to alter the environment to their own advantage. Such as flooding an arid plain to help the damp-loving shamblers and thus gain their favour. The Stygian Abyss will not be a static place but will be host to a myriad of moving, shifting, and changing elements. Subterranean rivers can flood, or even run dry, lava cuts off halls, underworld flora blooms and spreads to new regions. The player may re-visit an area to find it has completely changed and encounter new hazards where before there were none.
